The first-ever Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to be held in
Singapore August 14-26, 2010. Approved in July 2007 by the International Olympic Committee, the new global event will
have teenage athletes - 14 to 18 years old - compete in the same sports as those at the "Professional" Olympic
Games. The inaugural 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will be followed by the 2012 Winter YOG,
2014 Summer YOG, 2016 Winter YOG ... and so on ... in alternate years to the "Professional" Olympic Games.
Wait a minute, not so fast. The creation of the Youth
Olympic Games obviously gives the IOC and broadcasters a youth product to sell. But, is anyone concerned about the
young lives that run up against the commercial machine of the most powerful brand in the world? God Bless Nodar Kumaritashvili.

When will the IOC announce the Youth Olympic Games to US media?
Lausanne, Switzerland- “The Youth Olympic Games are the flagship of the IOC’s determination to reach out to
young people. This is a key moment for the Olympic Movement," stated Jacques Rogge to journalists at the
announcement of Singapore as host city for the 2010 event. Why haven't the Youth Olympic Games made
US News? How can kids and parents learn about the Youth Olympic Games?

How hard is the IOC trying to reduce carbon emissions?
In an Associated Press story today announcing Singapore as the first 2010 Youth Olympic Games host city, IOC President
Jacques Rogge declared that the IOC cannot solve the world's problems. "We believe the Olympic Games are a force
for good but don't expect from the games what they cannot deliver."
But with Mr. Rogge's creation
of the Youth Olympic Games, the IOC itself delivers a new series of global events which will bring escalating
carbon emissions. We're not asking the IOC to solve global warming, just don't unnecessarily add to it.
People across the globe are purchasing energy-efficient lightbulbs, re-usable grocery bags and otherwise
working to reduce carbon emissions. So what does the IOC do? They create YOG. Well, surely IOC executives turn
out all the lights at home at night, so we can't say they aren't trying.
