The inaugural Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to be held in Singapore August 14-26, 2010. The Internatioal Olympic Committee (IOC) wants athletes - 14 to 18 years old - to compete in the same sports as athletes at the current "Professional" Olympic Games.

The 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will be made up of over 3,600 athletes and 800 officials from 205 countries along with over 800 media representatives and an expected 500,000 spectators. The 2010 Summer YOG will be followed by 2012 Winter YOG, Summer 2014, Winter 2016 and so on, in alternate years to the Professional Olympic Games.

Wait a minute, not so fast.   The IOC and Olympic broadcasters seek to sell the youth demographic to sponsors and advertisers. The creation of the Youth Olympic Games simply gives the IOC and broadcasters a youth product to sell. Is anyone concerned about the young lives affected by production of this Olympic "show"?

How are kids sitting in front of video games (that the IOC has stated they concerned about) supposed to learn about the great opportunity the IOC is offering?

When will the IOC announce the Youth Olympic Games to US media?

Jacques_Rogge_ioc_olympics_26feb06_0.jpgLausanne, Switzerland- “The Youth Olympic Games are the flagship of the IOC’s determination to reach out to young people. This is a key moment for the Olympic Movement," stated Jacques Rogge to journalists at the announcement of Singapore as host city for the 2010 event.

Why haven't the Youth Olympic Games made US News?  How can kids and parents learn about the Youth Olympic Games?

How hard is the IOC trying to reduce carbon emissions?

In an Associated Press story today announcing Singapore as the first 2010 Youth Olympic Games host city, IOC President Jacques Rogge declared that the IOC cannot solve the world's problems. "We believe the Olympic Games are a force for good but don't expect from the games what they cannot deliver."

But with Mr. Rogge's creation of the Youth Olympic Games, the IOC itself delivers a new series of global events which will bring escalating carbon emissions. We're not asking the IOC to solve global warming, just don't unnecessarily add to it.

People across the globe are purchasing energy-efficient lightbulbs, re-usable grocery bags and otherwise working to reduce carbon emissions. So what does the IOC do? They create YOG. Well, surely IOC executives turn out all the lights at home at night, so we can't say they aren't trying.
