Approved in July 2007 by the International Olympic Committee,
the inaugural 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will be followed by the 2012 Winter YOG,
2014 Summer YOG, 2016 Winter YOG ... and so on ... in alternate years to the current "Professional" Olympic
Games.
Wait a minute. Not so fast.
Consider that at this time, it goes against common sense for humanity to accept further International Olympic Committee global
events at the moment we seek to protect our children by reducing carbon emissions.
The Youth Olympic Games would sensibly be launched in global celebration
once we have resolved the risk of climate change.
The Youth Olympic Games are not being announced in the USA
World-wide, there are 117 press releases. Countries where the Youth Olympic Games have been announced include Greece, United
Arab Emirates, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Malyasia Switzerland and Pakistan.
The Youth Olympic Games were unanimously
approved by the IOC membership in July 2007. But seven months later, as of February 29, 2007, there have been only 2 mentions
in United States press. This information is referenced under "News" on Google.com, search term "Youth
Olympic Games".
Still no mass media annoucement of the Youth Olympic Games in the US
How are kids sitting in front of video games (that the IOC has stated they concerned about) supposed
to learn about the great opportunity the IOC is offering?
When will the IOC announce the Youth Olympic Games to US media?
Lausanne, Switzerland- “The Youth Olympic Games are the flagship of the IOC’s determination to reach out to
young people. This is a key moment for the Olympic Movement," stated Jacques Rogge to journalists at the
announcement of Singapore as host city for the 2010 event.
Why haven't the Youth Olympic Games made
US News? How can kids and parents learn about the Youth Olympic Games?
How hard is the IOC trying to reduce carbon emissions?
In an Associated Press story today announcing Singapore as the first 2010 Youth Olympic Games host city, IOC President
Jacques Rogge declared that the IOC cannot solve the world's problems. "We believe the Olympic Games are a force
for good but don't expect from the games what they cannot deliver."
But with Mr. Rogge's creation
of the Youth Olympic Games, the IOC itself delivers a new series of global events which will bring escalating
carbon emissions. We're not asking the IOC to solve global warming, just don't unnecessarily add to it.
People across the globe are purchasing energy-efficient lightbulbs, re-usable grocery bags and otherwise
working to reduce carbon emissions. So what does the IOC do? They create YOG. Well, surely IOC executives turn
out all the lights at home at night, so we can't say they aren't trying.
